ITHACA, N.Y. –
Mitch Couch (Oneonta) registered three of Cortland's 12 victories as the Red Dragons' men's outdoor track and field team competed at the Ithaca College Tuesday Quad Meet. The competition included athletes from Cortland, Ithaca College, SUNY Delhi, and Herkimer County Community College.
Couch met ECAC qualifying standards with his efforts of 14.66 meters (48' 1.25") in the shot put, 46.89 meters (153' 10") in the discus, and 52.14 meters (171' 1") in the hammer throw. Cortland's other ECAC qualifier was Nich Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell), who won the high jump with a height of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75") that currently ranks 23rd nationally in Division III.
Mike Cruz (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) won both the long jump at 6.04 meters (19' 9.75") and the triple jump at 12.14 meters (39' 10").
Richard Taylor (Westbury) was the 200-meter dash champion (23.49) and
Jerel Williams (East Islip) won the 400-meter dash (50.81).
Austen Johnson (Jamestown) posted the fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles (57.97),
Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) won the pole vault (4.40 meters - 14' 5.25"), and
Paul Ippolito (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) was the javelin throw winner (48.57 meters - 159' 4"). In addition,
Grant Boyd (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) recorded a time of 33:59.17 in the 10,000 meters as the lone finisher in the race.
Cortland also notched four runner-up showings at the meet:
Tevin Smith (Ithaca) in the 100-meter dash (tied for second at 12.00 seconds);
John Nitterour (Big Flats/Horseheads) in the 400-meter dash (51.86);
Shawn Silliman (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) in the 400-meter hurdles (59.36); and
Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) in the shot put (12.74 meters - 41' 9.75").
Cortland, ranked 11th in the latest USTFCCCA Division III national computer rankings, will compete at the Cornell Big Red Invitational on Sunday, May 1 at 11 a.m. The Red Dragons will also send two men -
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) and
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) - to compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at The Penn Relays on Thursday, April 28, in Philadelphia.
