ONEONTA, N.Y. - Cortland clinched the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) softball regular-season title and the right to host the league's six-team postseason tournament May 5-8 with a sweep of a doubleheader at Oneonta.

The Red Dragons (29-9, 15-1 SUNYAC) won the opener, 9-7, and the nightcap, 9-5. The second game was called due to darkness with Cortland batting and two runs scored in the top of the seventh. The stats in the seventh count since they didn't affect which team won the game. The game is considered final, and not halted, since by SUNYAC rules the second game of a doubleheader is final if it has reached regulation status when it's called.

Cortland 9, Oneonta 7

Cortland scored four times in the top of the sixth to take a 9-4 lead, then held on as Oneonta scored three times in the bottom of the seventh and had the potential winning run at the plate.

The teams combined for 28 hits - 16 for Cortland and 12 for Oneonta. Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) and Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) each finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Bucci had a double and also drew a walk, while Barbato tripled and doubled to finish a homer shy of hitting for the cycle.

All nine Cortland starters recorded at least one hit. Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, and Stephanie Tirone (Amherst/Williamsville South) finished 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) earned the win in relief and improved to 6-1. Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) started but, despite leaving with a lead the team didn't relinquish, did not pitch the minimum four innings required to earn the win. Lachall allowed three runs on eight hits in three innings with one walk and one strikeout. Van Dorn threw the final four innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Sabrina DeAngelis, now 8-9, started for Oneonta. Amanda Graziano entered to pitch during the sixth, and DeAngelis reentered to start the seventh. DeAngelis gave up eight runs on 14 hits in six and a third innings. She fanned two and walked one. Graziano was charged with a run on two hits in two thirds of an inning.

Bucci singled in a run in the fourth and Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) hit an RBI single in the fifth to give Cortland a 5-3 lead. Oneonta capitalized on two errors to score an unearned run in the fifth. Cortland's four-run sixth started with back-to-back doubles by Hoyt and Tirone, a Bucci walk and a Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) sac bunt. Barbato, the first batter Graziano faced, hit a two-run triple, and she scored two batters later on a Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) RBI single.

Oneonta's seventh-inning threat began with an error and a one-out Katie O'Gorman walk. After a passed ball moved the runners ahead, DelGenio hit a two-run single to pull the hosts within 9-6. Singles by Brocco and Ruiz loaded the bases with one out. Alyssa Garrison followed with a fielder's choice grounder that drove in DelGenio while forcing out Ruiz at second. Cortland attempted to complete the double play but Garrison was safe and the ball trickled away. Brocco tried to score and was thrown out at home to end the game.

The three-run second featured a Barbato two-run double and a Churchill RBI groundout.

Oneonta (20-15, 9-7 SUNYAC) scored in the first on a Brocco RBI single and two in the second on a Garrison sac fly and a Lefebvre RBI single. The game remained 6-3 until the guests added a run in the fifth on a Wolstenholme two-out RBI single that drove in Schoonmaker, who had reached on a wild pitch after striking out and stole second.

Oneonta drew within 7-5 with two unearned runs in the sixth. They loaded the bases on a walk, fielder's choice, error and Ruiz infield single. Ruiz finished the game 2-for-2. Pinch hitter Lauren Sabatino hit a ball that resulted in an error to allow two runners to score.

Cortland opened the seventh with a Barbato single. After she was forced at second, the next batter reached on an error.
