PRINCETON, N.J. - Cortland sent a total of seven distance runners - three men and four women - to the Princeton University Sam Howell Invitational.
On the men's side, junior
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) and senior
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) were the top two collegiate finishers, and placed third and fourth overall, out of 20 runners in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Ryan finished the race in 9:02.47 and Iacovelli crossed the finish line in 9:07.27.
The times are currently the top two nationally in Division III and are easily ECAC championship qualifiers. The field consisted of 10 Division I athletes, one Division II runner, six Division III competitors and three non-collegians.
Sophomore
Aaron Granger (Delevan/Pioneer) finished 30th overall out of 49 runners, and sixth in his section, in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:03.03.
On the women's side, junior
Mary Baughman (Rush/Rush-Henrietta) finished 20th out of 49 runners, and sixth in her section, in the 5,000-meter run. Her time of 17:39.47 is an ECAC qualifier. Junior
Allison Schumann (North Salem) also ran in the race but did not finish.
In the 1,500-meter run, senior
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) finished 40th out of 49 runners, including 32 Division I entrants, in 4:48.32. Sophomore
Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) placed 46th in 4:58.10. Balzano missed qualifying for the ECAC championships by less than half a second.
Cortland returns to action next Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17, at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic. In addition, the Red Dragons are also scheduled to have decathletes and heptathletes at the Kutztown University Mondschein Multi-Event meet on Thursday and Friday, April 14-15.
