Vachon Moves Into Top Five Nationally in High Jump at Cornell Big Red Invitational

Nich Vachon's high jump of 2.10 meters (6' 10.75") is currently tied for fourth nationally in Division III
ITHACA, N.Y. - Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) moved into the top five nationally in the high jump and Mitch Couch (Oneonta) registered a top-20 national effort in the discus to highlight Cortland's efforts at the Cornell Big Red Men's Outdoor Track and Field Invitational.

Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships May 5-6 at SUNY Oneonta. Action begins 2 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Vachon cleared 2.10 meters (6' 10.75"), which is currently tied for fourth nationally in Division III. After clearing 1.95 meters on his third and final try, he then sailed past both 2.00 and 2.05 meters on his first attempts. Vachon successfully navigated 2.10 meters on his third attempt, and finished second at the meet behind a Cornell competitor.

Couch won the discus with a distance of 48.44 meters (158' 11"). He presently ranks 15th nationally in Division III. Couch also finished third in the hammer throw at 48.62 meters (159' 6").

The performances above were three of Cortland's six ECAC qualifiers at the meet. Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.07 seconds, while Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) was third in the prelims at 15.34 seconds but did not finish in the finals. Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) also met ECAC standards with his third-place pole vault of 4.50 meters (14' 9").

Alec Swider (Glenville/Scotia-Glenville) finished third in the 200-meter dash (22.54) and fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.24). The Red Dragons took three of the top four spots in the 400-meter hurdles as Austen Johnson (Jamestown) finished second (58.22), Shawn Silliman (Putnam Station/Ticonderoga) was third (58.31) and Aidan Farrell (Bloomingburg/Pine Bush) placed fourth (58.63).

Also for the Red Dragons, Paul Ippolito (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) finished third in the javelin throw (48.36 meters - 158' 8"), Couch was fourth in the shot put (14.18 meters - 46' 6.25"), Jerel Williams (East Islip) finished fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.25), and C.J. White (Middletown) turned in a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (12.65 meters - 41' 6").
