Jack Flood (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) is in fifth place halfway through the decathlon, and senior
Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and junior
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) each qualified for the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase, during Day 1 of the three-day NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Action continues Friday at Wartburg College with Day 2 of the decathlon, along with
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) competing in the high jump.
Flood currently has a decathlon score of 3,521 points, with only 51 points separating second from seventh place. He opened with 695 points in the 100-meter dash (11.78 seconds) and 741 points in the long jump (6.69 meters/21' 11.5"). He registered 612 points in the shot put (12.10 meters/39' 8.5") and 767 points in the high jump (1.96 meters/6' 5"), and finished the day with 706 points in the 400 meters (52.42 seconds).
Iacovelli and Ryan are two of 14 steeplechase competitors who will run in the finals Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (Central). The top five runners in each of two heats, along with the next four fastest runners, advanced to the finals. Iacovelli placed second in his heat in 9:15.26, while Ryan was sixth in his heat, but had the second-best time of the four final qualifiers, in 9:16.94.
