Nick Vachon clears the bar during the high jump competition at the NCAA Div. III Championships. Vachon won the national title with a height of 2.10 meters (6' 10.75").
WAVERLY, IOWA – Cortland junior
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) won the national title in the high jump during Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Wartburg College.
In addition for the Red Dragons, junior
Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) earned All-America honors in the decathlon with a fourth-place national finish.
Vachon was one of two competitors, along with Central College's Logan Mulford, to clear 2.10 meters (6' 10.75"). Vachon, however, cleared the mark on his first attempt, while Mulford took two tries at that height. Vachon won the title based on that tiebreaker after both missed on all three of their attempts at 2.13 meters (6' 11.75").
Vachon won Cortland's 14th men's track and field national championship, which includes 11 outdoor titles, and he's the first champion since Jake Zanetti won the outdoor pole vault in 2009. Vachon is the first Cortland's men's high jumper to win a national title since Mark Mirabito in 2001, and he is Cortland's 102nd individual national champion across all sports and both genders. He is also an All-American for the second time this school year; he placed seventh in the high jump at the indoor national meet.
Flood finished with a score of 6,685 points after completing the decathlon with five events Friday. Ethen Schoen of Wisconsin-Stout won the title with 6,809 points. Flood actually had the same point total as Kevin Wagner, the third-place finisher from St. Scholastica, but finished fourth due to the fact that Wagner beat him head-to-head in seven of the 10 events.
Flood scored 830 points in the 110-meter hurdles (15.16 seconds), followed by 519 points in the discus (32.76 meters/107' 6") and 590 points in the pole vault (3.90 meters/12' 9.5"). He wrapped the day with 521 points in the javelin throw (45.38 meters/148' 11") and 704 points in the 1,500-meter run (4:36.31).
Flood is an All-American in multi-events for the second time. He finished third in the heptathlon at the indoor national meet.
Cortland is currently tied for second in the team standings with 15 points. The Red Dragons conclude NCAA championship action Saturday in three events.
