Cortland Men Win SUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Fueled by three individual champions and eight runners-up, Cortland claimed its 13th SUNYAC men's outdoor track and field conference title and first since 2013 at the two-day league championship meet, hosted by SUNY Oneonta.

Cortland won the team title with 166 points, followed by Oneonta at 148, Geneseo with 128 and Brockport with 119. Rounding out the eight-team field were Fredonia (82), Buffalo State (74), Plattsburgh (53) and Oswego (46).

Junior Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) set a school record and tied a 31-year-old SUNYAC meet record in the high jump with his winning height of 2.13 meters (6' 11.75"). The league champion for the second straight year, Vachon eclipsed the school outdoor high jump record of 2.11 meters (6' 11") held by Michael Brown (1984) and Mark Mirabito (2001).

Vachon matched the SUNYAC meet record established by Fredonia's Kym Orr in 1985. Vachon cleared 2.08 meters (6' 9.75") on his third and final try, then made it over the bar at 2.13 meters on his first attempt. His run ended with three misses at 2.14 meters. Vachon is currently tied for second nationally in Division III in the event.

Jarred Iacovelli (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) repeated as league champ and broke his own meet record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:12.23. Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) finished second behind Iacovelli in 9:25.11.

Mitch Couch (Oneonta) won the league crown in the hammer throw at 55.59 meters (182' 4"). He also finished second in both the shot put (14.91 meters/48' 11") and the discus (44.79 meters/146' 11"). Couch scored 26 team points in field events, more than anyone else at the men's meet.

Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) placed second in the 100-meter dash (10.75) and third in the 200-meter dash (21.99). Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) was runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles (14.75), Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) finished second in the triple jump (14.34 meters/47' 0.75"), while Paul Ippolito (Closter, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest) placed second in the javelin (51.21 meters/168' 0").

Also, Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) finished second in the decathlon (5,578 points). He scored 738 points in the 100-meter dash (11.57), 731 points in the high jump (1.92 meters/6' 3.5"), 691 points in the 110-meter hurdles (16.38), and 600 points in the long jump (6.06 meters/19' 10.75").

The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.
