Kayla Koelbel's winning heptathlon score of 4,012 points was three points better than the runner-up

Kayla Koelbel (Bradford, PA/Kings Park (NY)) won a league title in the heptathlon to lead Cortland's performances at the SUNYAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted Friday and Saturday by SUNY Oneonta. Cortland finished fifth in the final team standings.
Koelbel won with a score of 4,012 points. She barely edged Brockport's Marisa Gosdeck, who finished with 4,009 points. Koelbel led by six points with one event left and was only outscored by three points in the 800-meter run to clinch the title. Koelbel scored 817 points in the 100-meter hurdles (15.19), 701 points in the high jump (1.57 meters/5' 1.75"), 695 points in the 200-meter dash (27.20), and 669 points in the 800 meters (2:31.94).
Dana Kupiec (Salem) joined Koelbel on the All-SUNYAC list with a second-place time of 1:04.36 in the 400-meter hurdles. The individual league champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while individual runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference.
Oneonta won the league title with 189 points, followed by Brockport with 183.5. Geneseo (174), Buffalo St. (104.5), Cortland (73), Fredonia (54), Plattsburgh (23) and Oswego (16) rounded out the eight-school team standings.
Four Red Dragons earned third-place finishes.
Midge Moore (Massapqeua) was third in the 100-meter dash (12.42),
Kailyn Balzano (East Greenbush/Columbia) placed third in the 800 meters (2:13.01),
Kayla Blomback (Orchard Park) was third in the 1,500 meters (4:40.34), and
Jane Martinez (East Lyme, CT) cleared a third-place height of 3.30 meters (10' 10") in the pole vault.
Cortland is scheduled to send competitors to the Swarthmore Final Qualifier meet on Monday, May 16, and the ECAC Div. III Outdoor Championships Wednesday and Thursday, May 18-19, at Westfield State in Massachusetts.
