Cortland Splits Final Two Matches at Austin Invitational

SHERMAN, TEXAS - Cortland finished 1-1 during the second day of the Austin College Women's Volleyball Invitational after falling to McMurry University and defeating Rust College, both in straight sets. The Red Dragons ended 1-3 at the tournament and are 4-4 on the season.

McMurry defeated Cortland 25-23, 25-18, 25-16. Nicole Silberer (Centereach), Courtney Silberer (Centereach) and Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) led the Red Dragons with eight kills each. Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC), who was named to the all-tournament team, registered 19 digs, and Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) totaled 30 assists. Patora added 13 digs, N. Silberer and Deja Smith (Suffern) each had three blocks, and Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) served three aces.

Cortland closed the tournament with a 25-5, 25-11, 25-11 win over Rust. Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) led the team with nine kills and no errors in 11 attempts for a .818 attack percentage. Anna Scarpinito (Wading River/Shoreham-Wading River), Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) and C. Silberer added four assists each.

The Red Dragons finished the match with 28 aces, the most they've had in a match since serving 38 aces versus York College (N.Y.) in 2004. Graff and Valerie Fischer (Williston Park/Mineola) each recorded six aces, Scarpinito had five, and Patora, Meg Pembroke (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) and Czeczotka added three each.

Pembroke led the team with three blocks and Maria Gelyon (West Seneca/Immaculata Academy) handed out 17 assists.

Cortland will travel to the University of Scranton on Wednesday, September 14, for a 6 p.m. non-league match.
