Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Cortland Falls in Penalty Shootout, 2-1, at #13 Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore's Kayla Rose converted the decisive penalty shootout goal as the nationally 13th-ranked Thoroughbreds defeated Cortland, 2-1, in a non-league field hockey contest. Skidmore improved to 6-1 and Cortland dropped to 5-3 with the decision.

The teams were tied 1-1 through regulation and two 15-minute sudden-victory overtime periods. The game then went to the shootout to determine the winner. Becca Halter was successful on Skidmore's second of five shootout attempts, and Cortland responded on its third attempt when Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) found the cage. After two misses by each team, Rose gave Skidmore the victory when she recovered after being initially stopped and making a shot from the left side. Skidmore was awarded a "team goal" for winning the shootout.

Cortland hung tough with the hosts despite being outshot, 29-5. Skidmore took a 1-0 lead 19:25 into the game on a Miranda Davenport goal, assisted by Krista Lamoreaux. Cortland responded, however, just over three minutes later when Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) tipped in a shot, assisted by Jessica Welsh (Hamilton), off a penalty corner play.

Cortland goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made a career-high 17 saves, including nine in overtime. Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) also helped force overtime with a defensive save with 1:37 left in regulation. Skidmore goalie Elizabeth Coughlin recorded three saves. Goals and saves from the penalty shootout do not count statistically.

Cortland will host 11th-ranked William Smith on Wednesday, September 28, at 5 p.m.
