ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Led by a winning performance from senior
Mary Baughman (Rush/Rush-Henrietta), the Cortland women's cross country team finished first in a field of 21 schools at the Roberts Wesleyan Harry F. Anderson Invitational.
Cortland finished with a team score of 67 points, 10 better than Roberts Wesleyan. Daemen finished third with 89, followed by Rochester (98) and Fredonia (111) in the top five.
Baughman won the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 18.1 seconds, more than four seconds faster than runner-up Elizabeth Valento of Roberts Wesleyan. A total of 223 runners competed.
Baughman was one of five Cortland runners to place in the top 35. Senior
Allison Schumann (North Salem) crossed the finish line fifth in 18:56.8, with junior
Megan Wagner (Niskayuna) close behind her in seventh in 18:59.0.
Junior
Jasmine Meerdink (Rome/Rome Free Academy) placed 22nd (19:30.0) and junior
Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) was 32nd (19:44.4). In addition, freshman
Eliza Nichols (Smithtown/Smithtown West) ended in 86th place (20:48.7).
Cortland returns to action next Saturday, October 1, at the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.
