Field Hockey Blanks Ithaca, 3-0, to Extend Winning Streak Over Bombers

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Juniors Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley), Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) each scored goals as Cortland shut out visiting Ithaca College, 3-0, in a non-league field hockey matchup.

The Red Dragons improved to 3-0 with the victory. Cortland earned its 15th straight win over the Bombers in a 16-year span since the 2001 season.

Sophomore Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made two saves for the shutout. Katie Lass recorded 11 saves and Maddie Keppel made a defensive save for Ithaca (0-2).

Cortland took a 1-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first half. Redmond took a penalty corner feed from Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and blasted home a shot from just inside the top of the circle. The goal was initially disallowed, but the officials conferred and determined the shot was legal.

The Red Dragons picked up an insurance goal just 1:04 into the second half. Stein notched her second assist when she won a battle about 10 yards in front of the goal and sent a pass forward to Branch. The ensuing shot by Branch found its way through Lass' pads and into the cage. The Red Dragons tallied their final goal in the 55th minute when, on a penalty corner, Dani Barto Nichols/Tioga Central) sent a ball from the upper left of the circle to the far right post and O'Brien redirected the ball into an empty cage.

Cortland outshot Ithaca, 26-6, and earned nine penalty corners to the Bombers' four.

Cortland will host nationally 18th-ranked Rochester on Friday at 7 p.m.
