Red Dragon Men and Women Win Season-Opening Cortland Pumpkin Relays

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each finished first at the season-opening Cortland Pumpkin Relays at Holsten Pool.

The Red Dragon women placed first in a six-team field with 754 points, followed by Nazareth (668) and New Paltz (586) in the top three. Cortland's men were first out of five schools with a score of 770 points. Nazareth finished second (684) and New Paltz third (548).

Cortland hosted a season-opening relay meet for the first time since the 2009-10 season. The event featured an unorthodox format with many relays that are normally not held, including a number of three-swimmer events.

In the women's meet, Cortland posted three victories and one second-place finish. Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh), Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) won the 500-yard freestyle relay in 4:50.82. Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Kordal and Erica Koumas (East Meadow) were victorious in the 3x100-yard butterfly relay (3:07.43), while Simpfenderfer, Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) and Rachel Noach (White Plains) won the 3x500-yard freestyle relay (16:58.78).

Johnson, Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Kordal and Davey placed second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.23).

Cortland's men registered one victory and three runner-up showings. Tim Rokos (Duanesburg), Nick Galeto (West Islip) and Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) won the 3x100-yard medley relay in 2:53.90. Bailey Eigbrett (Avon), Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys), Cameron Cook (Vestal) and Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) finished second in the 500-yard freestyle relay (4:37.40).

Galeto, Rokos and Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) earned a second-place finish in the 3x100-yard backstroke relay (2:46.08). John Severs (Suffern), Galeto and Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) finished second in the 3x500-yard freestyle relay (16:06.36).

Cortland will return to action on Friday, Nov. 3 with dual meets at Ithaca College starting at 5 p.m.
