CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh men's soccer team scored three straight second-half goals, two while playing a man up, and defeated nationally 16th-ranked Cortland, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the SUNYAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Red Dragons fell to 15-3 with the loss and await a possible at-large NCAA Div. III playoff berth, while the Cardinals improved to 13-6-1 and advance to the championship game at Oneonta on Saturday, Nov. 4. The NCAA tournament field will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m.

Junior Dan Figarella (East Fishkill/John Jay East Fishkill) scored his first goal of the season for Cortland. Sophomore Miguel Tunas (North Salem) recorded his team-high ninth assist of the season. Senior goalie Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) made five saves.

Sophomore Jimmy Marchena (Massapequa/Plainedge) paced Plattsburgh with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Joe Gula (New Market, MD/Oakdale) and junior Alex Price (Plattsburgh/Beekmantown) each added goals, and senior Nicholas Laurent (New City/Clarkstown South) collected an assist. Sophomore goalie Patrick Feeley (Harriman/Monroe-Woodbury) turned aside five shots.

After a scoreless first half, Figarella gave the Red Dragons a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute when he finished off Tunas' corner-kick serve deep in the box. Gula tied the game in the 59th minute on a header in front after a cross by Marchena. Twelve minutes later, a Cortland player was sent off with a red card, forcing the Red Dragons to play the remainder of the game a man down.

Plattsburgh capitalized in the 75th minute when Marchena one-timed a loose ball from 35 yards out that snuck inside the left post. As Cortland pressed for the equalizer, Price netted an insurance goal from the right side after finishing off a 3-on-2 break in the 84th minute.

UPDATE (11/4/17): Following the completion of the tournament, Tunas and Figarella were named to the SUNYAC all-tournament team.
