BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Cortland women's and men's swimming and diving teams each posted dual-meet victories at Buffalo State Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragon women cruised to an 185-91 win, and the Cortland men edged the Bengals, 154-145.
Cortland will return to action on Dec. 1-2 at the Hamilton College Invitational.
WOMEN'S RECAP:
Five Cortland swimmers and divers finished first in two events as part of a 15-victory team performance for the Red Dragons.
Marissa Kordal (Eden) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.37) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.14) and
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) was victorious in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:12.21) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.28).
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.10) and 500-yard freestyle (5:31.69).
Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) won the 100-yard freestyle (57.50) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.46), the latter as an exhibition entry. Simpfenderfer also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.25).
Caroline Tighe (East Meadow) recorded the top score in both diving events. She won the 3-meter event with 215.15 points, and the 1-meter event as an exhibition entry with 215.80 points.
Three other Cortland swimmers each won a race.
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:29.84),
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) was the 200-yard backstroke winner (2:22.49), and
Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:53.81).
The Red Dragons also finished first in both relays.
Rachel Noach (White Plains), Szewczyk, Simpfenderfer and Davey won the 400-yard medley in 4:15.66. The 200-yard freestyle relay unit of Kanoza,
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint),
Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) and Davey finished the afternoon with a winning time of 1:45.93 as an exhibition entry.
Other highlights for Cortland during the meet included two second-place finishes each by Noach (200-yard freestyle in 2:09.19) and 200-yard backstroke in 2:23.87) and Miller (50-yard freestyle in 26.46 and 100-yard freestyle in 59.05.
MEN'S RECAP:
Cortland claimed six individual event titles, including two by freshman
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park).
Freshmen provided five of the Red Dragons' six wins. Cornelia won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.36) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.86).
Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:47.37),
Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.57), and
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge) touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.02).
Sophomore
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.12 and was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.00).
Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) and
Ian Killane (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each took home a pair of runner-up finishes. Kirchgessner was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:06.77) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.69), while Killane placed second in both 1-meter (246.95 points) and 3-meter (221.40 points) diving.
Other Red Dragon individual runners-up included:
Noah Farmer (New Hartford) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.75);
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) in the 100-yard freestyle (49.46);
Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.68);
Alex Regna (Brockport) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.19); and
Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:19.78).
Cortland finished second in both relays. The 400-yard medley relay squad of
Jake Borkowski (Bloomingburg/Pine Bush), Farmer, Donlevy and Eigbrett finished in 3:45.50. The 200-yard freestyle relay of Cremer, Donlevy, Boyko and Eigbrett clocked in at 1:31.05.
