ITHACA, N.Y. - Freshman
Marissa Kordal (Eden) earned two individual victories and freshman
Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) and sophomore
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) recorded one win apiece as Cortland opened its women's swimming and diving dual-meet season with a 209-91 loss at Ithaca College.
Kordal was the fastest swimmer in both the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.84) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.45). Simpfenderfer won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.78), and Szewczyk won by three tenths of a second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.45).
In addition to her win in the 200-yard freestyle, Simpfenderfer narrowly placed second in the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 5:20.75 was just about three tenths of a second behind the winner from Ithaca.
Junior
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) registered two runner-up finishes with times of 2:20.60 in the 200-yard backstroke and 1:01.98 in the 100-yard butterfly. Sophomore
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (56.27).
The Red Dragons placed second in both relays. Johnson, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey finished second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.74), and Davey, Simpfenderfer, freshman
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) and Kordal were second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:49.14).
Cortland will host Geneseo in a dual meet on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.
