Cortland Women Earn Runner-up Finish at Nine-Team Hamilton Invitational

Natalie Johnson swam legs on the winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays
CLINTON, N.Y. – The Cortland women's swimming and diving team finished second out of nine schools at the Hamilton College Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Red Dragons finished with 629.5 points, easily ahead of third-place Oswego (501.5). Hamilton won the team title with 736 points.

Cortland finished first in two relays and second in two others. Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Kalee Walden (Dryden) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.77), while Walden, Johnson, Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) and Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.32).

The combination of Johnson, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey placed second in the 400-yard medley relay (4:13.64) and Kordal, Johnson, Simpfenderfer and Davey were runners-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:48.16). In addition, Davey, Simpfenderfer, Kordal and Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) turned in a third-place effort in the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:17.59).

Individually, Simpfenderfer recorded runner-up showings in three events - the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.94), 200-yard freestyle (2:00.29) and 1,650-yard freestyle (18:44.92). Davey placed third in both the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.58) and 100-yard freestyle (56.75) and was fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.18).

Kordal also registered three top-five finishes. She was third in the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.92), fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:58.39), and fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:34.84). Szewczyk placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.84) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.43).

Johnson finished fifth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.72) and sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:21.64).

Walden finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle (26.33) and Ann Marie Muehlbauer (Heidelberg, Germany/Helmholtz-Gymnasium) was fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (57.53).

In diving, Caroline Tighe (East Meadow) finished fifth on both the 1-meter (212.80 points) and 3-meter (215.95 points) boards in six-dive scoring. She was fifth on 3-meter (366.70 points) and sixth on 1-meter (357.50 points) in 11-dive scoring. Jackie Bors (North Tonawanda) was sixth on the 3-meter board with her 11-dive score of 331.65 points.

Cortland will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6 when it hosts Hartwick in a 1 p.m. dual meet.
