BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior
Cassidy Chapko (Valley Falls/Hoosic Valley) set school single-game records with 43 points and nine made 3-pointers as Cortland defeated host Buffalo State, 85-65, in a SUNYAC women's basketball game.
Chapko made 15-of-22 shots from the field, including 9-of-14 from 3-point range, and was 4-of-5 from the foul line. She broke the school scoring record of 38 points set by Sarah Bouley at Ithaca during the 1993-94 season, and her nine treys eclipsed the previous school mark of eight held by three players (Molly Byrne at Oneonta in 2011-12, Sara Cavanaugh at Geneseo in 2006-07, and Erin Egan vs. Potsdam in 2001-02). Chapko's 43 points are tied for the eighth-highest total this season by a Division III women's basketball player nationally.
Cortland evened its overall record at 11-11 and is now tied for third with Oneonta in the league standings at 10-5. The Red Dragons will play at fifth-place Fredonia (10-6 league record) Saturday at 4 p.m.
Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals and
Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Crosby made 5-of-9 shots from the floor.
Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) added nine points and four rebounds.
Princella McCullough led Buffalo State (6-17, 3-13 SUNYAC) with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Mariah Rosario scored 12 points, while Shayasha Spencer and Grace Licata scored nine points each.
Cortland trailed 36-34 at halftime and 41-34 less than two minutes into the third quarter. Cortland, however, outscored the Bengals 28-8 the rest of the quarter to take a 62-49 lead.
Chapko scored 18 points in the third quarter, with her 3-pointer in the final seconds tying both school marks of 38 points and eight treys. She set both school records on a 3-pointer with 6:02 remaining in the game, and she capped her historic 43-point evening with a layup at the 3:32 mark that put Cortland ahead 80-62.
Cortland shot 14-of-28 (50 percent) from the 3-point arc and 48 percent overall from the field. Buffalo State shot 43 percent from the floor overall and 44 percent (8-of-18) from deep, but the Bengals committed 23 turnovers compared to Cortland's 14.
