Women's Hockey Closes Season with 4-2 Loss vs. Utica

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Emily Coope (Phoenix, AZ/Colorado Tigers) tallied two goals and one assist to lead the Utica women's ice hockey team to a 4-2 win at Cortland Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Red Dragons ended their season at 3-21-1 overall and 2-15-1 in ECAC West play, while the Pioneers improved to 16-8-1 and 11-6-1.

For Cortland, junior Jackie Richards (Lapeer, MI/Compuware) and freshman Emily King (Tonawanda/Buffalo Regals) each netted a goal. Senior Makenzie Wright (Burlington, ON/New Jersey Rockets), sophomore Charlie Calamari (Barrington, IL/Chicago Fury) and freshman Miranda Kolb (Watertown/Syracuse Nationals) contributed one assist apiece. Senior goalie Kelly Farinella (Marlton, NJ/New Jersey Rockets) made 28 saves.

Senior Gabrielle Schnepp (Northville, MI/Belle Tire) and junior Meghan Power (Windsor, ON/Neumann) also scored goals for Utica. Five others chipped in with one assist each. Senior goalie Keira Goin (Dobbs Ferry/Hotchkiss School) registered 18 saves.

After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Pioneers built a 3-0 lead through the second period. Coope scored on a loose puck in front at 3:17 and netted her second of the game at 6:37 with a shot through a screen. Two minutes later, Calamari was denied on a penalty shot by Goin. Power's power play goal at 8:58 made it 3-0.

Richards' first goal of the season on a wrist shot from the right circle at 8:30 of the third period pulled Cortland to within 3-1. Schnepp's rebound goal at 11:52 put the Pioneers ahead 4-1. King then netted her fourth goal of the season at 17:33. Cortland pulled Farinella for an extra skater over the final 30 seconds but could not capitalize.
