BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Cortland men's indoor track and field team finished second out of eight schools at the 2017 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships. The meet was held Friday and Saturday at Brockport's Special Events and Recreation Center.
Geneseo edged Cortland for the team title. The Knights finished with 177 points to Cortland's 170. Brockport was third with 99 points.
Six Red Dragons won individual league titles.
Mitch Couch (Oneonta) earned Co-Field Athlete of the Meet honors after winning the weight throw (17.40 meters/57' 1") and placing second in the shot put (15.76 meters/51' 8.5"). He currently ranks 20th nationally in the weight throw.
Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) won the 60-meter hurdles (8.16) and
Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) was the high jump winner (2.06 meters/6' 9"). This places Malone eighth nationally and Flood 12th nationally in Division III.
Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) won the long jump (7.20 meters/23' 7.5") and
Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) captured the triple jump (14.67 meters/48' 1.75"). Jones is now ranked fourth nationally and Williams eighth.
Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) won the heptathlon (4,801 points) and is currently ranked 11th in the nation.
Cortland also earned five runner-up finishes: In addition to Couch in the shot put, they were: Flood in the 60-meter hurdles (8.35, 8.33 prelims);
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) in the high jump (2.00 meters/6' 6.75");
C.J. White (Middletown) in the triple jump (14.44 meters/47' 4.5"); and the distance medley relay team of
Andrew Espey (West Hempstead/Holy Trinity),
Andrew Yarde (Valley Stream/Holy Trinity),
James Forte (Merrick/Sanford H. Calhoun) and
Mehamed Abdurahim (Rochester/Rush-Henrietta) (10:35.62). White now ranks ninth nationally in the triple jump.
The top two finishers in each event earn All-SUNYAC honors. Winners are first team and runners-up are second team. The league will be adding a third team designation for third-place finishers in 2018 after the league grows to nine schools competing with the addition of Potsdam. (It was incorrectly reported here earlier that the third team designation started this year).
Romain Saint Germain (Westbury) clocked in third in the 60-meter dash in 7.08 seconds,
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) was third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.41, 8.39 prelims), and
Charlie Kollmer (Mount Sinai) finished third in the pole vault by clearing 4.80 meters (15' 9"). Kollmer's effort places him 18th nationally in the pole vault.
Saint Germain also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 22.81 seconds. Christopherson placed fourth in the high jump with a height of 2.00 meters (6' 6.75"). He missed on the first two tries of 2.00 meters while Vachon only missed once. The 4x400-meter relay team of
Enoch Jemmott (Brooklyn/South Shore),
Austen Johnson (Jamestown),
Andrew Yarde (Valley Stream/Holy Trinity) and
Noah Serrette (Lawrence) also placed fourth (3:25.26).
Jemmott finished fifth in the 60-meter dash (7.12),
Ivan Mieses (Middletown) finished fifth in the pole vault (4.55 meters/14' 11"), Flood placed fifth in the long jump (6.81 meters/22' 4.25"),
Tyler Hochadel (Hamburg/Frontier) finished fifth in the weight throw (14.48 meters/47' 6.25"), and
Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) placed fifth in the heptathlon (4,366 points).
Aaron Granger (Delevan/Pioneer) finished sixth in the mile run (4:22.93),
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) placed sixth in the 3,000 meters (8:43.14), and Jones placed sixth in the long jump (6.76 meters/22' 2.25").
Austen Johnson (Jamestown) was seventh in the 400 meters (51.38). In the pole vault,
Matt Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) finished seventh at 4.40 meters (14' 5.25") and Flood was eighth. Flood also cleared 4.40 meters, but Greenlaw cleared the height on his first attempt while Flood cleared it on his second attempt. Hochadel ended eighth in the shot put with a distance of 13.90 meters (45' 7.25") and
Thomas Towner (Lansing) finished eighth in the heptathlon with 4,007 points.
Cortland will compete at the ECAC Div. III Indoor Championships on Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, in Ithaca. The Red Dragons' ECAC qualifiers during the SUNYAC Championships were:
