Nick Galeto won both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke races and swam the opening legs on both winning relays
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland earned the top two spots in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, to overcome an 11-point deficit and the Red Dragons edged visiting Fredonia, 150-148, in the final dual meet of the season.
Cortland trailed 146-135 and needed to pick up both first-place (11) and second-place (4) points in the final relay.
Nick Galeto (West Islip),
Luke Rutigliano (Haworth, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest),
Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) and
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) won the race in 1:30.04.
Brian Cremer (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point),
Zach Healy (Orchard Park),
Tim Thatcher (Staten Island/St. Peter's Boys) and
Thomas Ryan (Long Beach) placed second in 1:31.22, just less than a second faster than Fredonia's top relay.
Galeto also won two individual events with times of 54.79 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke and 2:02.74 in the 200-yard backstroke. Cremer won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.61), Eigbrett won the 50-yard freestyle (22.58),
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) captured the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.58), and the combination of Galeto,
Noah Farmer (New Hartford),
Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) and Eigbrett won the meet-opening 200-yard medley relay (1:40.52).
Cortland swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle as Eigbrett was followed to the wall by Rutigliano in second (23.21) and Kohlhoff in third (23.52). Rokos was second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:04.85), Farmer placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.40), Thatcher was the runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (50.90), and Ryan finished second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.59).
Lee Wade (Holtsville/Sachem East) eclipsed the 300-point mark in both diving events for a pair of second-place finishes. He scored 315.90 points on the 1-meter board and 325.95 points on the 3-meter board. Also for the Red Dragons,
Dylan Burns (Cornwall) finished second in the 100-yard backstroke (55.12) and
John Severs (Suffer) was second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:36.71).
Cortland celebrated Senior Day at the meet and recognized its three seniors - Burns, Wade and
Jamie Miller (Eden).
Cortland will compete at the SUNYAC Championships Feb. 15-18 at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
