Malone to 60m Hurdle Finals, Heptathletes Hold Top Three Spots, After NCAA Day 1

NAPERVILLE, ILL. – Sophomore Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) advanced to the finals in the 60-meter hurdles, and Cortland holds the top three spots after four events of the heptathlon, as the Red Dragons competed at Day 1 of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships. The competition will conclude Saturday at North Central College.
 
Malone finished eighth during the 60-meter hurdles prelims in 8.22 seconds and earned the final spot into Saturday's finals. Malone is guaranteed an All-American finish, which goes to the top eight in each event.
 
Sophomore Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) currently leads the heptathlon with 2,812 points, with senior Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) second at 2,796 points and senior Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) third at 2,769 points. The athletes competed in the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump Friday, and will finish the heptathlon Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000 meters.
 
DiVittorio scored 794 points with his first-place high jump of 1.99 meters (6' 6.25"), 782 points with his fourth-place finish of 7.29 seconds in the 60-meter dash, and 767 points with his winning effort of 6.80 meters (22' 3.75") in the long jump.
 
Flood tied for second in the high jump (1.93 meters/6' 4") to score 740 points and finished second in the shot put at 12.26 meters (40' 2.75") for 641 points. His highest scoring event was the 60-meter dash, where he picked up 745 points with his time of 7.40 seconds.
 
Christopherson's top two scoring events Friday were the 60-meter dash, where he picked up 792 points with first-place time of 7.26 seconds, and the high jump, where he scored 687 points with his height of 1.87 meters (6' 1.5").
 
Also on Friday, senior Mitch Couch (Oneonta) finished 12th in the weight throw finals with a distance of 17.31 meters (56' 9.5") and junior Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) finished 14th in the long jump finals with a distance of 6.71 meters (22' 0.5"). Levi Perry of Wisconsin-Whitewater won the weight throw (19.67 meters/64' 6.5") and Jerry Williams of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the long jump (7.35 meters/24' 1.5").
 
Cortland's Saturday competition will open with the start of the heptathlon's final three events at 10 a.m. Junior Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) and sophomore C.J. White (Middletown) will compete in the triple jump finals at 1 p.m., and Malone will compete in the 60-meter hurdles finals at 1:45 p.m. (all times are Central).
