Women's Lacrosse Suffers Tough 11-10 OT Setback at #13 Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. - Morgan Cadwell scored from the free position three minutes, 24 seconds into overtime to lift the nationally 13th-ranked Ithaca women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 victory versus sixth-ranked Cortland Thursday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons fell to 3-2 on the season, while the Bombers improved to 5-1.

Senior Nicolette Tortorici (Deer Park) led Cortland with three goals and one assist. Junior Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee), sophomore Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) and freshman Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) each netted two goals with Elmer also recording an assist. Senior Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) chipped in with one goal and one assist.

Senior goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) registered 13 saves and three ground balls for the Red Dragons. Junior Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) recorded three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Meager added three draws and two caused turnovers, Elmer scooped up three ground balls and junior Liza Ferro (Cortland) caused two turnovers.

Cadwell finished with four goals and one assist for Ithaca. Ally Runyon scored four goals, Morgan Racicot tallied two goals and one assist and Allison Panara added one goal and one assist. Goalie Kimberly Presuto stopped eight shots. Reid Simoncini caused four turnovers and collected seven ground balls, while Cadwell and Gaby Berne each secured three draws.

Neither team led by more than two goals the entire game. Cortland had a 4-2 advantage and a 6-4 lead in the first half before Ithaca made it 6-5 at the break. After the Red Dragons went ahead 7-5 early in the second half, the Bombers netted four straight goals for a 9-7 lead with 22:26 to play in regulation. Cortland tied the game on goals from Stone and Elmer before Cadwell gave Ithaca back the lead at 10-9 with 18:55 remaining to set up a wild finish to regulation.

After a failed clear attempt by Cortland with less than five minutes remaining, Ithaca ran down the clock to under two minutes but the Bombers were assessed a yellow card and turned the ball back over to Cortland. The Red Dragons again failed to execute a clear, and Ithaca regained possession and was successful in getting the ball into its offensive third. The Bombers worked the clock as Cortland moved Beshlian out to double team the ball and attempted a shot into what appeared to be an empty net with 20 seconds on the clock. Beshlian flashed back into the crease, denied the scoring bid and collected the ground ball. Cortland worked a clear and Ohberg fired in the game-tying goal with three seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

In the first three-minute half of the extra session, Ithaca won the draw and had possession for much of the time, getting off five shots with Beshlian making three saves. The Bombers secured the draw in the second half of the overtime and quickly earned a free-position shot that Cadwell scored on to earn the win.
