ONEONTA, N.Y. – In a game where seconds truly mattered, junior
Devin Phelps (Chittenango) scored just before the horn as the nationally ninth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team earned an 11-10 win in overtime at Oneonta Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 8-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference with their second consecutive overtime victory, while the hosts fell to 3-5 and 0-1.

Joe Scalise (Fairport) made five saves and collected four ground balls for the visiting Red Dragons. Senior
Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) won 17-of-21 faceoffs and secured 10 ground balls. Senior
Dave Foster (Farmingville/Sachem East) scooped up four ground balls, , and Phelps and junior
Trevor Pratt (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) each caused two turnovers.
Hunter DeLuca led Oneonta with four goals. A.J. Solomito tallied two goals and one assist, T.J. Kilmetis scored twice, Ryan Curly notched one goal and two assists and Jake Loeb netted a goal, Jimmy Kickel had two assists, and Troy Stasko and Brendan Callahan each chipped in with an assist.
Goalie Andrew Helfman turned aside 20 shots for Oneonta. Stasko collected four ground balls, while Curley and John Shea each secured three ground balls.
Cortland took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter as McNaney scored twice. Oneonta pulled to within 6-5 at the half with DeLuca picking up a pair of goals in the second quarter. After Oneonta tied the game at 7-7 just past the midway point of the third quarter, deLyra and McNaney netted goals to give Cortland a 9-7 advantage through three quarters.
DeLyra made it a 10-7 game 44 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Oneonta cut the lead to 10-9 with 3:32 on the clock. Hart won the ensuing faceoff, and Helfman denied a shot by deLyra with 1:08 remaining with Cortland on the timer. The teams then traded turnovers with Cortland holding possession with 50 seconds remaining and on a timeout. AFter the timeout, Cortland turned the ball back over to Oneonta, but the hosts gave the ball back to the visiting Red Dragons with under 10 seconds on the clock. With a chance to seal the win, Cortland lost possession, and Solomito scored the game-tying goal with just three seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Cortland was awarded the ball on a faceoff violation to begin the extra period, and eventually had three shots, two of which were saved by Helfman. Oneonta worked a good clear, and, after a timeout, Scalise denied a bid by DeLuca with 33 seconds remaining after Oneonta received a 30-second warning. Oneonta retained possession but turned the ball over with less than 20 seconds remaining. Scalise collected the ground ball and started a clear that led to Siracusa setting up the game-winning goal by Phelps with only one second on the game clock.
