#7 Men's Lacrosse Turns Back Geneseo, 12-8, on the Road

GENESEO, N.Y. –  The nationally seventh-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team never trailed in earning a 12-8 SUNYAC victory at Geneseo Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win. The Knights, coached by one-time Cortland assistant Nick Fiorentino, dropped to 7-3 and 1-1.

Junior Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) netted a game-high four goals to lead the Red Dragons. Junior Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) scored three goals, and junior Devin Phelps (Chittenango) tallied a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Sophomore Joey Panariello (Islip) recorded two goals and one assist, senior Jimmy Nielsen (Miller Place) contributed one goal and one assist, freshman Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West) chipped in with three assists and senior Andrew Gonzalez (Sayville) added an assist.

Junior goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) registered 11 saves and allowed seven goals in 57:34 for Cortland. Freshman Jake Craybas (Bethel, CT) made one save in 2:26. Senior Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) won 13-of-20 faceoffs and secured four ground balls. McNaney and junior Justin Siracusa (Sayville) also collected four ground balls, and senior Dave Foster (Farmingville/Sachem East) caused two turnovers.

Alex Leuze paced the Geneseo offense with three goals. Michael Engstrom tallied two goals and one assist, Joshua Merkel had one goal and two assists, Ryan Kelly contributed one goal and one assist and Kyle Wanamaker scored once.

Goalie Michael Yehl stopped 15 shots and scooped up three ground balls. Jack Crowley recorded seven ground balls and three caused turnovers, Ryan Cates had five ground balls and three caused turnovers and Chris Dunn caused three turnovers.

The teams traded the first four goals of the game in the first quarter before Cortland went ahead, 4-2, to open the second quarter and took a 5-3 lead into the half. The Red Dragons narrowly outscored the Knights, 3-2, in the third quarter for an 8-5 advantage with 15 minutes remaining. After Kelly's goal made it an 8-6 game, Cortland scored three straight goals, two from McNaney and one from Beresovoy, to build an 11-6 lead. Geneseo pulled to within 11-8 with 4:28 to play, but Phelps capped the scoring at 1:33 for the 12-8 final.
