Cortland Sweeps Visiting Fredonia; Churchill Three-Run Double Fuels Game 1 Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) hit a three-run double in a four-run third inning and Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) and Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) combined on a five-hit shutout as Cortland defeated Fredonia, 4-0, in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Churchill also homered as the Red Dragons (12-6, 4-0 SUNYAC) completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the second game, which was called in the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Cortland will travel to Rochester for a non-league doubleheader Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Cortland 4, Fredonia 0

All of the game's scoring came in the bottom of the third inning. Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) hit a one-out single and went to third on an Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) double. Kelly O'Gorman's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) sac bunt scored Phillips, with O'Gorman safe on the play. Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) drew a two-out walk to load the bases, and Churchill cleared them with a three-run double to center.

Fredonia had runners reach third in three of Lachall's five innings in the circle, but each time she pitched out of the jam. Lachall improved to 4-2 after allowing three hits and no walks with one strikeout. Van Dorn, technically in a non-save situation, allowed two hits and no runs with two strikeouts over the final two innings to preserve the win.

Churchill finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI and Phillips went 1-for-2. Katelyn Dennis finished 2-for-3 for Fredonia, while Katie Yudin pitched six innings for the Blue Devils and allowed four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Cortland 9, Fredonia 1 (6 inn.)

Cortland scored in five of its six at-bats to support Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa), who evened her season record at 3-3 by allowing five hits and one unearned run in six innings. She fanned three batters and walked none.

Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) went -3-for-3 with a walk, double and RBI and Phillips ended 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for Cortland. Yudin was 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the Blue Devils (10-8, 0-2 SUNYAC).

Cortland scored twice in the first on a Hoyt RBI fielder's choice and a Barbato RBI single. O'Gorman's RBI infield single pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second.

Fredonia got on the board in the third with the assistance of three Cortland errors. Nikki Lent reached on an error and stole second. She then went to third on a wild throw by the catcher, and scored on the play when the ball was misplayed in the outfield on the backup.

Hannah Feldman's (Buffalo/Sweet Home) pinch RBI single drove in a run in the fourth, and the Red Dragons added two more in the fifth on Churchill's leadoff homer, a Barbato double, a groundout, and an Erica Sadowski (Liverpool) RBI fielder's choice.

The Red Dragons invoked the eight-run rule with three in the bottom of the sixth. Two runs scored on a fielder's choice and an error, and the final run came across on Phillips' bases-loaded single.

Sam Seegar started for Fredonia and permitted six runs, five earned, in four and a third innings. She walked four batters.
