Cortland Wins Pair of Tight Contests vs. Visiting Oneonta

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland softball team remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a sweep of visiting Oneonta. The host Red Dragons won the opener, 4-1, and the second game, 4-3.

Cortland (23-7, 12-0 SUNYAC) will host New Paltz in a makeup doubleheader Sunday at noon. The teams were originally scheduled to play in Cortland Friday.

Cortland 4, Oneonta 1

After being held hitless for four and two third innings by Oneonta starter Sabrina DeAngelis, Cortland broke through four three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Cortland scratched out a run in the first when Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) reached second on an error, moved to third on a Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) sac bunt, and scored on a Mikayla Shade (Glenmont/Bethlehem) sac fly. Oneonta tied the game in the fifth when Katie O'Gorman singled, eventually moved to third on a Dana DelGenio infield single and scored on a wild pitch.

With two outs and no one on in the bottom of the fifth, Chelsea Palma (Holbrook/Sachem North) broke up the DeAngelis no-hit bid with a bloop single that landed just beyond the pitching circle. Victoria Brown (Fresh Meadows/Archbishop Molloy) walked and Kelly O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), the younger sister of Oneonta senior Katie, singled up the middle to drive home pinch runner Danielle Olive (Bethpage). Schoonmaker followed that with a two-run single up the middle.

Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) earned the win as she scattered eight hits over seven innings. She struck out two and walked one. She worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first when she got a grounder to first that resulted in a force at home, followed by a strikeout.

DeAngelis finished with four hits allowed in six innings with four runs, three earned, one walk and one strikeout. DelGenio finished 3-for-4 and Killeen Martin was 2-for-3 at the plate for the guests.

Cortland 4, Oneonta 3

Cortland scored three runs in the bottom of the third and then held on for the win to complete the sweep. Kelly O'Gorman started the decisive rally with a two-out double and scored on a Schoonmaker single to center. Schoonmaker went to third on a Phillips single to right. After Phillips stole second, Shade lined a two-run single just inside the third base bag.

Oneonta had loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third, but Cortland starter Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) avoided damage with pop-out and flyout. The visiting Red Dragons, however, put up a run in the fourth on a Jennifer Brocco RBI single, and closed to within 3-2 in the fifth when Katie O'Gorman lined a leadoff homer just inside the left field foul pole.

Cortland pushed its lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Kelly O'Gorman singled with one out, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored when Phillips beat out a slow grounder to short.

Flint pitched the first five innings for the win. She allowed seven hits and two runs with two strikeouts and no walks. Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) threw the final two innings for her third save of the season. She retired the side in order in the sixth, but got into some trouble in the seventh. Pinch hitter Rebecca Wentink led off with an infield single. Van Dorn got the next two batters out, but Selena Ruiz reached on a single to short and DelGenio hit a bad-hop RBI single through the right side. With the tying run at second, Van Dorn got the next hitter to ground out to third to end the game.

Kelly O'Gorman finished 2-for-2 with two RBI, Phillips was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Shade went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead Cortland. Oneonta (19-11, 7-7 SUNYAC) was led by Ruiz and DelGenio, who each finished 2-for-4. Amanda Graziano started for Oneonta and allowed three runs on four hits in three innings. DeAngelis pitched the final three frames and gave up one run on three hits with one strikeout.
