Red Dragons Survive Oswego Scare, 11-10 in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) scored two minutes, 34 seconds into overtime to give the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team a come-from-behind, 11-10, victory versus Oswego Wednesday afternoon in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons improved to 13-1 overall with their third overtime win this season and 5-0 in the conference. With the win, the Red Dragons secured at least the second seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament and can capture the top seed with a win at Plattsburgh on Saturday.

Senior Jimmy Nielsen (Miller Place) and juniors Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) and Devin Phelps (Chittenango) each tallied two goals and one assist to lead Cortland. Senior T.J. deLyra (Brightwaters/Bayshore) netted two goals, and Beresovoy, senior Andrew Gonzalez (Sayville) and sophomore Joey Panariello (Islip) each added a goal, while sophomore Dean Riley (Homer) chipped in with an assist.

Junior goalie Joe Scalise (Fairport) made 10 saves for the Red Dragons. Senior Mike Hart (Cornelius, NC/Hough) won nine faceoffs and collected four ground balls. McNaney scooped up four ground balls, and senior Anthony Zangari (Lancaster, PA), sophomore Ethan Parks (Penfield) and freshman Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) each recorded three ground balls.

Sophomore Bobby Emerson (Lake Grove/Centereach) led Oswego (6-8, 2-3 SUNYAC) with six goals. Junior Tyler Nason (Bohemia/Connetquot) scored twice, senior Zach Anderson (Camillus/West Genesee) and freshman Caleb Alford (Adams/South Jefferson) netted one goal apiece, and sophomore Jarrod Wilkom (Smithtown/Smithtown West) and freshman Tim Schof (Montgomery/Pine Bush) each registered five assists.

Senior goalie Wyatt Russo (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) turned aside 16 shots. Senior Chase Izyk (Oswego) won 9-of-14 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, and senior Tim Garrett (Oceanside) secured six ground balls.

Cortland opened up a 5-1 lead in the second quarter and held a 5-2 lead at the half before Oswego mounted a rally. With the Red Dragons leading 6-3, the Lakers scored three straight goals to even the score at 6-6. McNaney made it an 8-6 game with back-to-back goals, but Emerson notched two goals to tie the game at 8-8 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nason gave Oswego its first lead of the game at 13:25, and Alford put the Lakers up 10-8 with his goal at 8:32. Panariello cut the Laker lead to 10-9 at 7:04 before Nielsen tied the game at the 3:05 mark. Each team had chances to score the game winner in the closing minutes but could not capitalize. In overtime, Izyk won the faceoff to give Oswego possession. After the Lakers were put on the 30-second clock, Cortland forced Oswego into a tough shot that Scalise saved.

Cortland worked a good clear and called timeout. After the timeout, Phelps fed a pass from the left side to the right side, where Beresovoy fired a shot past Russo for the game winner.
