Mikayla Shade (Glenmont/Bethlehem) went 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBI and two runs scored and
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) allowed one earned run over seven innings as Cortland defeated Geneseo, 8-3, to salvage a doubleheader split with the host Knights.
Geneseo won the opener, 3-2, on Alyssa Presutti's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh after Cortland had rallied to tie the game with two runs in the top of the inning.
Cortland, ranked 17th nationally, is 25-11 overall and is the SUNYAC regular-season champion for the third straight year with a 14-4 league mark. The Red Dragons will host the six-team, double-elimination SUNYAC tournament starting Thursday, May 4. Cortland will play sixth-seeded Oneonta at 9 a.m., followed by second-seeded Oswego versus fifth-seeded New Paltz, and third-seeded Plattsburgh against fourth-seeded Buffalo State.
Cortland closes its regular-season schedule Tuesday with a makeup doubleheader versus Ithaca at 3 p.m.
Geneseo 3, Cortland 2
Geneseo took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a Danni Napoli two-run homer. Cortland's game-tying rally in the seventh started with a
Skyler Hoyt (Endicott/Union-Endicott) leadoff double. Pinch runner
Amber Rice (Parish/A-P-W) moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when pitcher
Sam Van Dorn (Medford/Patchogue-Medford), moved into the batting order from the flex position, hit a an RBI single.
Ericka Sadowski (Liverpool) re-entered to run and went to second on a groundout. With two outs,
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) hit an single to left center to drive home the tying run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Fedor reached on an error and pinch runner Ashlyn Kersch was bunted to second by Brooke Wolff. Presutti followed with the winning double to right.
Van Dorn suffered the loss despite allowing just one unearned run over three and a third innings of relief. She gave up four hits, struck out one and walked none.
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started and gave up two runs on four hits in three innings. Alexis Kidder went the distance for the Geneseo and earned the win. She permitted nine hits and two runs with two walks.
Barbato finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Cortland offense, while Napoli was 3-for-3 with a homer and two RBI and Maddison Tucker went 2-for-2 for the Knights.
Cortland 8, Geneseo 3
Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a Shade RBI single and a Hoyt two-run double. Shade hit a solo homer in the third to push the lead to 4-0, but Geneseo took advantage of three Cortland errors in the bottom of the inning to score twice, and a bigger threat was thwarted when a liner to Shade at first base turned into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded.
Barbato drove home a run on a groundout in the fifth, and Cortland added three unearned runs in the sixth on a
Hannah Feldman (Buffalo/Sweet Home) bases-loaded walk and a two-out, two-run error. Geneseo's final run came in the bottom of the sixth on a Tucker single, a Kylie Papagelos double and a Julie Lalka RBI groundout.
Lachall scattered seven hits and two walks and struck out three to improve to 10-5 on the season. Ashlyn Kersch tossed all seven innings for Geneseo (21-15, 9-9 SUNYAC) and gave up seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
In addition to Shade's three-hit performance,
Andrea Schoonmaker (Marlboro) was 1-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored. Alyssa Persich went 2-for-3 and Presutti was 2-for-4 for the hosts.
