CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Devin Phelps (Chittenango) matched his career high with eight points on a personal-best six goals and two assists to lead the nationally eighth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team to a 17-6 win versus Endicott Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Div. III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The Red Dragons improved to 16-2 and next face St. Lawrence in the third round on Saturday at a time and venue to be announced.

Thomas McNaney (Marcellus) tallied five points on three goals and two assists for Cortland. Sophomore

T.J. deLyra (Brightwaters/Bay Shore) also netted two goals. Sophomore

Nate Beresovoy (LaFayette) chipped in with one goal and one assist, and senior
Andrew Gonzalez (Sayville) and junior
Liam Erickson (Brewster) each notched a goal. Junior
Tyler Brown (Camillus/West Genesee) picked up a career-best three assists.

Joe Scalise made nine saves in 56:50 for the Red Dragons before giving way to freshman
Jake Craybas (Bethel, CT), who stopped the only shot he faced on goal in 3:10. Phelps and junior
Trevor Pratt (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) each secured four ground balls, while sophomore
Ethan Parks (Penfield) caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls.
Seniors Tommy Hughes (Coram/Longwood) and Colin Bannon (Westport, CT/Staples) led Endicott (10-8) with two goals each. Senior Will Jennings (Danvers, MA/Bridgton Academy) recorded one goal and one assist, sophomore Matthew Faucher (Western Springs, IL/Lyons Township) scored a goal, and sophomore Bryan McManus (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) added an assist.
Junior goalie Grant Thompson (South Hamilton, MA/Hamilton-Wenham) registered 11 saves. Hughes won 19-of-26 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 11 ground balls, and Bannon recorded four ground balls.
DeLyra gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at 11:53 of the first quarter before Bannon tied the game at 10:55. Phelps then netted four straight goals, three to close the opening quarter and a man-up goal early in the second quarter to make it a 5-1 game. After Hughes scored at 9:29, deLyra and McNaney gave Cortland a 7-2 lead at the half.
Beresovoy and Faucher traded goals to open the second half before Cortland closed the third quarter with seven consecutive goals, two each from Panariello, McNaney and Phelps, to take command of the game with a 15-3 lead. Erickson made it a 16-3 score, and bannon Hughes and Jennings scored goals in less than a one-minute stretch midway through the quarter to cut Cortland's lead to 16-6. Gonzalez completed the scoring off Brown's third assist of the game at the 3:59 mark for the 17-6 final.
