Vachon Surges Toward Top of National High Jump Chart at Oneonta Meet

Nick Vachon won the high jump with a height of 6' 10.75" that currently ranks him third nationally
ONEONTA, N.Y. - Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) won the high jump and put himself in position to make a return trip to nationals in the event as Cortland competed at the SUNY Oneonta Final Chance Men's Outdoor Track and Field Meet.

Vachon is the defending outdoor national champion in the high jump, but he entered the meet ranked outside of the top 20 national qualifying spots. However, he was successful on his first attempt at his first five heights, followed by success in his second try at 2.10 meters (6' 10.75"). Vachon took three attempts at a potential school-record 2.14 meters but was not successful. With his winning height, Vachon currently ranks third nationally in Division III and is basically assured a national berth.

The Red Dragons recorded four runner-up finishes at the meet. Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) was second behind Vachon in the high jump at 2.07 meters (6' 9.5") and Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) finished second in the long jump at 7.08 meters (23' 2.75"). Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.43) and Mitch Couch (Oneonta) was second in the discus (48.57 meters/159' 4").

Couch also ended third in the hammer throw (56.21 meters/184' 5") and seventh in the shot put (14.62 meters/47' 11.75"). Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) and C.J. White (Middletown) placed fourth (14.37 meters/47' 1.75") and fifth (14.29 meters/46' 10.75"), respectively, in the triple jump. Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.05, 14.72 prelims) and seventh in the high jump (1.89 meters/6' 2.25"). Flood was seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.09, 14.96 prelims).

Also for the Red Dragon men, Noah Serrette (Lawrence) finished fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (55.16), followed by Andrew Yarde (Valley Stream/Holy Trinity) in seventh (55.39) and Austen Johnson (Jamestown) in 12th (56.88). Enoch Jemmott (Brooklyn/South Shore) was sixth in the 400-meter dash (49.68) and Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) placed third in the decathlon (5,981 points).

On the women's side, Midge Moore (Massapequa) won the 100-meter dash in 12.08 seconds. Cat Lutjen (Sound Beach/Miller Place) was seventh in the javelin (32.21 meters/105' 8") and Kaylee Uhl (Waverly) placed 12th in the 400-meter hurdles (1:07.34).

As the final week of the regular season wraps up, Cortland currently ranks in the top 10 nationally in eight men's events and one women's event. Flood and Christopherson are the top two ranked decathletes, Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) is second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Malone is third in the 110-meter hurdles and Vachon is third in the high jump. Couch is fourth in the hammer, Jones ranks ninth in the triple jump, and Williams is 10th in the long jump. For the women, Dana Kupiec (Salem) ranks ninth in the 400-meter hurdles. The top 20 men and top 22 women declared in each individual event qualify for nationals.
