CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's outdoor track and field team totaled eight first-place and seven second-place finishes on the way to successfully defending its league title at the SUNYAC Championship Meet, hosted by Cortland Friday and Saturday. The Red Dragons earned their 14th league outdoor title overall and fourth in the last six years.
Cortland finished with 191.5 points, followed by Geneseo with 157 and Brockport at 135. Rounding out the eight-team field were Buffalo State (91), Fredonia (73), Oneonta (65.5), Oswego (60) and Plattsburgh (44).
Dev Williams (Syracuse/Corcoran) set a school record with his winning long jump of 7.44 meters (24' 5"). He currently ranks sixth nationally in Division III with the performance. He broke Shane Cassidy's school mark of 7.34 meters from 1994. Williams was originally believed to have broken SUNYAC and meet records, but his performances was aided by wind at a speed faster than allowed for conference records.
Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) also broke a school record with his preliminary time of 14.24 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles. He won the title Saturday with a time of 14.65 seconds. Malone currently ranks third nationally in Division III. The old school record was 14.55 seconds by Joe Shinn in 2015. Malone's mark was aided by wind too fast to allow for it to be a meet record, as originally believed.
Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) established a new meet record in the decathlon with his winning score of 6,339 points. The score ranks him 19th nationally, and breaks the previous meet mark of 6,309 points set by current teammate
Connor Christopherson (Morrisonville/Saranac) two years ago. DiVitorrio scored 799 points in the 100-meter dash (11.28), 796 points in the 110-meter hurdles (15.45), 765 points in the 400-meter dash (51.09), and 743 points in the long jump (6.70 meters/21' 11.75").
Christopherson combined with
Noah Serrette (Lawrence),
Enoch Jemmott (Brooklyn/South Shore) and
Austen Johnson (Jamestown) to win the 4x400-meter relay (3:20.12).
Serrette won the 400-meter hurdles in 54.26 seconds and
Mitch Ryan (Plattsburgh/Seton Catholic) captured top honors in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:24.73).
Jack Flood (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) won the high jump by clearing 2.03 meters (6' 8"), and
Mitch Couch (Oneonta) won the hammer throw with a toss of 56.42 meters (185' 1").
Jemmott and Christopherson each notched two runner-up finishes. Jemmott was second in the 200-meter dash (22.30) and 400-meter dash (48.76), and Christopherson finished second in the 110-meter hurdles (14.75) and the javelin throw (45.46 meters/149' 2").
Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) finished second in the high jump at 2.00 meters (6' 6.75") and
Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) was second in the triple jump (14.27 meters/46' 10"). Couch placed second in the discus (46.34 meters/152' 0").
League champions earn first-team All-SUNYAC honors, while runners-up are recognized as second-team all-conference. This year, for the first times, relays earn all-league honors in addition to individual competitors.
Cortland is scheduled to send competitors to the Swarthmore Final Qualifier meet on Monday, May 15, and the ECAC Division III Outdoor Championships Wednesday and Thursday, May 17-18, at Westfield State University in Massachusetts.
