19th Straight SUNYAC Title for #19 Red Dragons

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made a career-high 18 saves to lead the nationally 19th-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 12-7 win at 16th-ranked Brockport in the championship game of the 2017 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament Saturday afternoon. Beshlian was named the Tournament MVP as the Red Dragons (14-4) captured their 19th consecutive conference tournament title and the automatic NCAA Div. III playoff berth. The Golden Eagles fell to 15-2 and await a possible at-large bid.

Sophomore Carly Stone (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) led Cortland offensively with four goals. Seniors Makenzie Annable (Navarino/Onondaga) and Nicolette Tortorici (Deer Park) each netted three goals. Senior Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) and junior Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded one goal and one assist apiece, and freshman Molly Newton (Skaneateles) dished out three assists.

Freshman Lexie Meager (Syracuse/West Genesee) won seven draw controls for the Red Dragons. Tortorici and junior Liza Ferro (Cortland) each collected four ground balls.

Hannah Cullen led Brockport with three goals. Heather Conklin notched a pair of goals, Tess Knight and Andrea Zlinsky tallied one goal apiece, and Kelly Wall recorded two assists. Goalie Sara Shaddock made six saves. Wall secured four draws and caused two turnovers, Lauren Mancini caused four turnovers and scooped up three ground balls, Cassandra Minerd forced three turnovers and Conklin added three ground balls.

Cortland opened up a 4-0 lead just over seven and a half minutes into the game as Stone picked up a pair of goals. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-3 at the half with three of the next four goals. The teams traded the first four goals of the second half, and the Red Dragons held a 7-5 advantage with 15:29 to play. Cortland then netted three goals in just over two minutes to build a 10-5 advantage. Cullen cut it to 10-6 at 3:37, but Stone answered with her fourth of the game and Cortland held an 11-6 lead with 2:15 remaining. Conklin found the back of the net with 44 seconds to play, and Annable finished off the scoring off Newton's assist with 31 seconds on the clock.

Joining Beshlian on the All-Tournament Team were Annable, Ohberg, Tortorici, Stone and Newton of Cortland; Conklin, Knight, Minerd and Wall of Brockport; Karen Boronczyk of Geneseo and Kelsey Cohen of Oneonta.
