Nicole Wentz won her debut as Cortland's head coach as the Red Dragons swept Alfred

Box Score 2 CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's volleyball team began the "
Nicole Wentz" era with a three-set win over Alfred University and a four-set loss to nationally 13th-ranked Juniata College during the opening day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic.
The 12-team tournament continues tomorrow with the Red Dragons facing Rochester at 11 a.m. and Utica at 4 p.m. Juniata, an NCAA "Sweet 16" team a year ago, is currently tied for the tournament lead with Coast Guard at 2-0.
Cortland swept Alfred by scores of 25-10, 25-12 and 25-14. Sisters
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) and
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland versus Alfred with seven kills apiece. Nicole also served three aces.
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) dished out 25 assists, while
Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) and Amelio paced the squad with seven digs each.
Cortland jumped out to the lead versus Juniata with a 25-17 win in the first set, but the Eagles bounced back to win the next three sets, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-20.
Nicole Silberer put down 10 kills and added 11 digs for the Red Dragons in the loss.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with five kills and four blocks and Amelio has 20 assists and eight digs.
Also for Cortland, Graff led the way with 22 digs, followed by
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) with 12.
Wentz is in her first year as Cortland's head coach. She previous coached at Keystone College in Pennsylvania from both 2012-16 and 2003-04.
