Red Dragons Drop SUNYAC Opener at Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo field hockey team opened up a 4-0 lead at the half and went on to defeat Cortland, 5-0, in the SUNYAC opener for both schools. The Red Dragons fell to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Knights improved to 3-3 and 1-0.

Cortland junior goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) turned aside 11 shots. Goalie Mia Ludwig made two saves in posting the shutout for Geneseo.

Gabriella Clare led the Knights' offense with two goals and one assist. Giovanna Fasanello and Cara Stafford each tallied one goal and one assist, Diana Ruggiero scored a goal and Jordan Penkitis chipped in with an assist.

Clare gave Geneseo the lead 6:50 into the contest with a shot right in front. Fasanello made it a 2-0 game with a tip in at the left post at 17:21. Stafford's rebound goal at 29:56 pushed the lead to 3-0 before Ruggiero closed the half with a lifted shot from the top of the circle 35 seconds before the end of the half. Clare's second goal of the game 4:39 into the second half completed the scoring.
