More OT Zeroes for Women's Soccer

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team posted its fifth shutout of season in a 0-0 double-overtime tie versus RPI Saturday afternoon, extending its defensive scoreless streak to 444:24. The Red Dragons record now stands at 3-0-3 on the season, and the Engineers are 3-2-1.

For Cortland, freshman goalie Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) started her sixth straight game. She made two saves in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Abby Miller (Andover) played the final 65 minutes, turning aside seven shots. Sophomore goalie Joey Lyons (Harwood, MD/Southern) registered two saves for RPI.

The Engineers controlled much of the play, outshooting the Red Dragons, 27-10, in the contest. Senior Stephanie May (Windham, NH/Central Catholic) had three excellent scoring chances in the game for RPI, narrowly missing the goal twice in the first half and sending a shot just wide left off a Cortland defender in the 94th minute.

Cortland's best chance in the first half came in the 16th minute, but freshman Kyleigh Gallagher (Massapequa) delivered a header off a corner just over the crossbar. Perhaps the best opportunity for either team in regulation came in the 60th minute. After an RPI corner, senior Bethany Hanson (Fullerton, CA/Sunny Hills) delivered a clean header that hit the crossbar and bounced straight down. Sophomore Emily Kaplan (Smithtown/Happauge) followed with another header, but the shot edged over the bar.

In the second overtime. Miller denied junior Emily Dunn's (Seattle, WA/Ballard) uncontested shot from the right side, punching the attempt over the goal. The best chance for the Red Dragons in the extra time came with one minute left in the second overtime. Junior Vanessa Romero (Valhalla) stole the ball and sent a 25-yard shot from the left side that barely soared over the crossbar.
