NORTHAMPTON, MA. – The Cortland field hockey team broke open a 1-1 tie game with four consecutive goals in defeating Maine Farmington, 5-2, Saturday afternoon in the season-opening game for both teams at the Smith College Tournament. The Red Dragons next face the host school, Smith, Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game.
Senior
Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) led the Red Dragons with two goals, including the game winner late in the first half. Senior
Liz Athing (Bay Shore) and sophomore
Hannah Burchell (Whitney Point) each netted her first goal as a Red Dragon, while junior
Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) also tallied a goal and junior
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) added an assist. Junior goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) registered seven saves.
Jenessa Talarico and Kyla Sturtevant scored goals for the Beavers with Kasey Talarico collecting an assist. Alyssa Arsenault started in goal and made three saves in 35 minutes, and Haley Frizzle also stopped three shots in 35 minutes of action.
Burchell gave Cortland a 1-0 lead 17 minutes into the game off a Welsh assist. Talarico tied the score just two minutes later before Branch gave the Red Dragons the lead back for good 3:14 before the end of the first half. Branch pushed the lead to 3-1 2:29 into the second half, and Gibaldi and Athing followed with goals at 50:39 and 57:51, respectively, for a 5-1 Red Dragon lead. Sturtevant closed the scoring with 2:34 remaining in regulation for the 5-2 final.
