Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Red Dragons Work OT Again in 0-0 Tie vs. Clarkson

CORTLAND, N.Y. – For the third time this season, the Cortland women's soccer team went beyond regulation, playing to a 0-0 double-overtime tie versus Clarkson Friday afternoon in its home opener. The scoreless draw was the second for the Red Dragons (1-0-2) in 2017, while the three overtime contests to start the season happened for the first time in program history.

Freshman Danika Svendsen (Stillwater) started her third game in goal for Cortland, making one save in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Abby Miller (Andover) played the second half and two 10-minute overtime periods, stopping one shot. For the Golden Knights (1-1-1), sophomore goalie Elyse Green (Wilton/South Glens Falls) registered seven saves, many of the spectacular variety.

The Red Dragons outshot the Golden Knights, 19-4, in the game and held a convincing 10-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cortland freshman Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) had two first half chances denied, one on a loose ball shot that was blocked by a Clarkson defender with Green out of her goal and a second when Green charged off her line to stuff a partial breakaway. Cortland junior Brenna Conover (Smithtown/Hauppage) had an open chance with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, but Green made the save.

In the second half and overtimes, the Red Dragons dominated much of the play, holding a 15-1 shot advantage. Twice in regulation and once in the first extra period, Green made exceptional saves on scoring bids by Valente. The best chance for the Golden Knights came in the 82nd minute when senior Madison Kather (Amherst/Sweet Home) ran onto a long pass down the right side and worked a shot on goal, but Miller easily made the save.
