Jasmine Elmassry won the 1,000-yard freestyle by a hundredth of a second over teammate Lauren McBrinn
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland posted the fastest time in 12 events, including two individual wins apiece by
Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham),
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) and
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh), and the Red Dragons defeated visiting Oswego, 160-126, in a women's swimming and diving home dual meet.
Simpfenderfer won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.29 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:18.36. Szewczyk earned victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.18) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.80), while Davey was victorious in the 50-yard freestyle (26.17) and 100-yard freestyle (56.07).
Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) earned a victory in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.42) and was second in both the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.78) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.15), the latter as an exhibition entry.
Marissa Kordal (Eden) was the fastest swimmer, as an exhibition entry, in the 400-yard individual medley (4:56.93), and she finished second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:14.83).
Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) and
Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) each posted thrilling victories in the meet's two longest races. Elmassry won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:48.93, just one hundredth of a second ahead of McBrinn (11:48.94).
Halle King (Auburn/Skaneateles) was third in the event in 11:52.17. Elmassry was second as an exhibition entry in the 400-yard individual medley (5:08.94). McBrinn was on the right side of a nail-biter in the 500-yard freestyle with her winning time of 5:46.18, four hundredths of a second better than the runner-up from Oswego.
Cortland posted the best time in both relays. The combination of Johnson, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:54.76. Davey,
Kalee Walden (Dryden), Simpfenderfer and Kordal had the fastest time as an exhibition entry in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.31).
Also for the Red Dragons,
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) finished second behind Szewczyk in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.35) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.76), with
Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) completing the sweep in the 200 breast with her third-place time of 2:44.53. Walden finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.56).
Cortland will compete at the RPI Invitational Saturday at noon.
