Red Dragon Men Earn Nine Regional Qualifying Marks at Cornell Upstate Challenge

Zach Kashmer was Cortland's top finisher in the heptathlon with a fifth-place score of 4,194 points
ITHACA, N.Y. – Nine Cortland men's track and field athletes hit qualifying marks for the All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships as the Red Dragons competed at the two-day Cornell University Upstate Challenge. Cortland was the lone Division III school in the field that otherwise featured Division I programs Syracuse, Cornell, Binghamton, University of Buffalo, Colgate, Siena and Canisius.

The AARTFC is in its first year of existence this season, and its indoor championship will be held March 2-3 at Ithaca College. Cortland is no longer a member of the ECAC, so the AARTFC Championships are replacing the ECAC Division III Championships on the Red Dragons' indoor and outdoor schedules this year.

Dawan Jones (Buffalo/Tapestry Charter) finished second in the long jump at 6.96 meters (22' 10"), which currently ranks 13th nationally in Division III, and he was fourth in the triple jump at 13.81 meters (45' 3.75"). Matt Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) finished second in the pole vault at 4.50 meters (14' 9").

Three Red Dragons meet AARTFC standards in the 60-meter hurdles. Brent DiVittorio (Brewster) was ninth out of 21 competitors in 8.43 seconds, followed by Micheal Outing (Farmingdale) in 10th place (8.44) and Storm Malone (Harrison/Highland) in 13th (8.50).

Three Cortland heptathletes also put themselves on the AARTFC list. Zach Kashmer (Chili/Churchville-Chili) finished fifth with 4,194 points, Isaiah Brooks (Minoa/East Syracuse Minoa) was sixth with 4,142 points, and Tim Hawley (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) placed seventh with 4,035 points. They presently rank fourth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the region. Unlike other events, where everyone who meets the standard can compete at the regional championship, for the heptathlon only the top 12 qualifiers will be eligible.

Kashmer scored 700 points in the 60-meter dash (7.54) and 689 points in the 1,000 meters (2:57.46). Brooks tallied 732 points in the 60 meters (7.44), 714 points in the high jump (1.90 meters/6' 2.75"), and 713 points in the 60-meter hurdles (9.15), while Hawley scored 737 points in the 1,000 meters (2:52.73) and 679 points in the 60-meter hurdles (9.31).

In addition to the AARTFC qualifiers above, other highlights for the Red Dragons included Austen Johnson (Jamestown) finishing fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.59, Nick Vachon (Johnson City/Maine-Endwell) tying for fourth in the high jump (1.90 meters/6' 2.75"), DiVittorio finishing eighth of 20 in the 200-meter dash (23.41), and Amauris Olivo (Bronx/Urban Assembly School for Career in Sports) placing 11th of 27 in the 500 meters (1:08.74).

Cortland heads back to Cornell next Saturday for the Kane Invitational.
