Box Score PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Melissa Sheeran scored twice and Kayla Meneghin tallied a goal and two assists as the nationally top-ranked Plattsburgh women's ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 5-1, Saturday afternoon in NEWHL action at Stafford Ice Arena. The Red Dragons had a four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-8-2 overall and 1-7-1 in the conference, while the Cardinals improved to 14-2 and 9-0.

Freshman Katie DeVoe (Mississauga, ON/Vaughan Flames) netted her first career goal for Cortland. Sophomore Carly Weigold (Mahopac/Millbrook Mustangs) and freshman Katelinn Cummings (Johnson City/Northwood School) assisted on the score. Sophomore goalie Rachael Farmer (Grand Island/Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles) turned aside 33 shots.

Courtney Moriarty and Hannah Kiraly added goals for Plattsburgh, and Baye Flanagan and Meghan Kraus each collected two assists. Goalie Kassi Abbott made 13 saves.

Sheeran gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead at 15:46 of the opening period. Kiraly's power-play goal at 4:36 of the second period and Sheeran's second goal of the game 31 seconds before the end of the period made it a 3-0 game heading to the final 20 minutes.

Meneghin pushed the Plattsburgh lead to 4-0 at 6:05 of the third period with a short-handed goal. On the ensuing faceoff at center ice, DeVoe carried the puck ahead into Plattsburgh's defensive zone. Cummings threw a pass around the boards to Weigold, who fed a pass back to Cummings on the right side of the net. The puck caromed to DeVoe on the left side of the crease who knocked in a shot into the open left side of the goal. Moriarity completed the scoring just over three minutes later for the 5-1 final.

The same two teams meet Sunday at 3 p.m.
