TROY, N.Y. - The Cortland women's swimming and diving team finished third out of six teams at the RPI Kumpf Invitational. The Red Dragons scored 379 points, with RPI claiming the team crown with 609 points. Ithaca was second (572), with Cortland placing ahead of William Smith (297), Skidmore (265) and Clarkson (102).

Cortalnd also was 3-2 in dual-meet scoring at the event, with wins over William Smith, Skidmore and Clarkson and losses to RPI and Ithaca.

Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) finished second in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.10) and 100-yard freestyle (55.76). Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.42) and placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.24).

Marissa Kordal (Eden) earned a third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:21.41) and fourth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:30.24). Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.28) and Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.67).

Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint) recorded a pair of seventh-place finishes with times of 26.41 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 58.69 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) placed seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.32) and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.75).

Also in the top eight individually for the Red Dragons were Lauren McBrinn (Suffern/Paramus Catholic (NJ)) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (7th, 11:42.60), Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) in the 200-yard backstroke (7th, 2:22.91), Kalee Walden (Dryden) in the 50-yard freestyle (8th, 26.64), and Jasmine Elmassry (Queens/Francis Lewis) in the 200-yard butterfly (8th, 2:25.43).

Cortland's top relay effort was a third-place finish by Miller, Kordal, Davey and Simpfenderfer in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:47.92.

Cortland will compete in its final home meet of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. versus Division II Le Moyne College.
