Cortland Women Start 2018 Calendar at Cornell Upstate Challenge

Ali Galus finished fifth in the pentathlon
ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cortland women's track and field team opened its 2018 calendar year schedule by competing at the Cornell University Upstate Challenge. The Red Dragons were the lone Division III school in the field that otherwise consisted of Division I programs Syracuse, Cornell, Binghamton, University of Buffalo, Colgate, Siena and Canisius.

Harley Buczkowski (Holland Patent) recorded a qualifying performance for the All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference (AARTFC) Championships with her ninth-place weight throw of 14.81 meters (48' 7.25"). She had already qualified earlier in the season as well and currently ranks fourth in the region. The AARTFC is in its first year of existence this season, and its indoor championship will be held March 2-3 at Ithaca College. Cortland is no longer a member of the ECAC, so the AARTFC Championships are replacing the ECAC Division III Championships on the Red Dragons' indoor and outdoor schedules this year.

Ali Galus (Buffalo/Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart) was Cortland's top pentathlete at the two-day Cornell meet with a fifth-place score of 2,347 points. Her best events were the 60-meter hurdles (10.66 seconds; 594 points) and the high jump (1.39 meters/4' 6.75", 502 points). Nicole Wise (Franklinville) was close behind Galus with a sixth-place score of 2,336 points that included 595 points (10.65 seconds) in the 60-meter hurdles.

Cristin Rodriguez (Merrick/Calhoun) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter hurdles and finished eighth in 9.56 seconds. Carolyn Wagner (Delmar/Bethlehem) was eighth in the 400-meter dash (1:03.70). Other Red Dragons highlights includes Dana Messina (East Meadow) and Asia Cornwall (East Greenbush/Columbia) placing 12th (28.39) and 13th (28.87), respectively, out of 26 entrants in the 200-meter dash, and Sara Billings (Gansevoort/South Glens Falls) finishing 20th out of 43 in the mile run (5:33.05).

Cortland will return to Cornell next Saturday for the Kane Invitational.
