Red Dragon Women Defeat Division II Le Moyne, 165-129, to Close Home Slate

Heidi Simpfenderfer won the 1,000 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 200 IM races
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) won three individual events and Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) earned two victories apiece as Cortland closed its 2017-18 home schedule with a 165-129 dual-meet victory over Division II Le Moyne College.

Prior to the meet, Cortland honored its four seniors - Kathleen Gallagher (Pearl River), Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush), Kailey Smith (Endicott/Union-Endicott) and Kalee Walden (Dryden).

Simpfenderfer touched the wall first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.19), 100-yard freestyle (55.78) and 200-yard indvidual medley (2:17.75). Davey won the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.01) and 50-yard freestyle (25.86), while Johnson was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.88) and 200-yard backstroke (2:20.81). Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) finished second behind Johnson in both backstroke races. She registered a time of 1:04.55 in the 100-yard event, and lost by about two tenths of a second in the 200-yard race with her time of 2:21.02. Kanoza claimed second place in the 200-yard race by a mere eight hundredths of a second.

Lang won the 3-meter diving competition with 192.80 points and was second on the 1-meter board with 192.20 points.

Cortland opened the day with a win by Johnson, Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Marissa Kordal (Eden) and Davey in the 200-yard medley relay. Their time of 1:54.35 was three tenths of a second ahead of Le Moyne's runner-up squad. The afternoon concluded with Kordal, Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Simpfenderfer and Davey winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:44.78.

Szewczyk and Kordal each posted two runner-up individual finishes. Szewczyk was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.30) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:40.17), while Kordal placed second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.40) and 500-yard freestyle (5:33.99).

Cortland will head to Oneonta next Saturday, Feb. 3, for a 1 p.m. dual meet.
