Six Individual Double-Winners Propel Cortland Women Past Hartwick, 181-108

Jacqueline Lang won both diving events
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won 12 individual events – two each by six different competitors – and the Red Dragons defeated visiting Hartwick, 181-108, in women's swimming and diving dual meet action.
 
Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) won both the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:25.81) and 500-yard freestyle (5:36.57), and Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) captured the 200-yard freestyle (2:01.54) and 100-yard freestyle (56.87). Natalie Johnson (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman) took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.5) and 200-yard backstroke (2:21.39).
 
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland) earned victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.92) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:37.16). Marissa Kordal (Eden) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:16.74) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.39), while Jacqueline Lang (Middletown/Pine Bush) was victorious in both the 1-meter diving (180.60 pts.) and 3-meter diving (184.00 pts.) events.
 
The quartet of Johnson, Szewczyk, Kordal and Davey won the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.11). As an exhibition entry, the 400-yard freestyle relay unit of Davey, Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Kordal and Simpfenderfer posted the fastest time at 3:50.98.
 
Cortland swept the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Szewczyk's win followed by Vanessa Vedger (Dansville) in second (1:15.75) and Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) in third (1:16.16). Vedger also was the runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:42.61).
 
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee) was runner-up in two events – the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.97) and 200-yard backstroke (2:22.54). Kalee Walden (Dryden) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.72), Johnson was second in the 100-yard butterfly (1:03.67), and Rachel Pinsky (West Hartford, CT/Hall) placed second on 3-meter diving (173.90 pts.).
 
Cortland will host New Paltz on Friday, Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.
