Cortland Wins Heart-Pounding Five-Setter vs. Oneonta in Crucial SUNYAC Matchup

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - Five Cortland players recorded double-figure kills as the Red Dragons slipped past Oneonta in a thrilling five-set SUNYAC match on a neutral court in Brockport. Each of the first four sets of the three-hour match were decided by two points - Cortland won the first two, 27-25 and 25-23, and Oneonta captured the next two, 27-25 and 29-27. Cortland outlasted Oneonta in the fifth set, 15-11, for the victory.

Cortland improved to 3-4 in SUNYAC play and 10-15 overall, while Oneonta fell to 2-5 in the league and 10-16 overall. Cortland is currently tied for fifth place in the SUNYAC with Oswego, while Oneonta and Potsdam are tied for seventh. Cortland closes league play Saturday versus Oswego at 2:30 p.m. and versus Potsdam at 5 p.m. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Bridgette Moran (Massapequa Park/St. John the Baptist) finished with a career-high 13 kills with only three errors in 27 attempts for a .370 attack percentage. Four of her kills came on six attempts with no errors in the fifth set. Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with 13 kills, a career-high 22 digs, and a career-high tying seven blocks.

Taylor Konzen (Bohemia/Connetquot) and Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) each registered a career-high 11 kills. Anderson also finished with six blocks. Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) added 10 kills.

Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) totaled 52 assists, 14 digs, four aces and five kills. Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) led the Red Dragons with a career-best 27 digs, Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) had 11 digs and three aces, and Gabby Fernandes (Islip) ended with 10 digs.

Oneonta's Victoria Moulder finished with 24 kills, a .541 attack percentage and four blocks, and Clara Culeton had 17 kills. Jessica Fowler dished out 45 assists and added 12 digs and three aces. Lindsay Pelaccio led the team with 24 digs.

Cortland trailed 23-21 in the first set before tying the score at 23 on a Moran kill and Chiavetta ace. Oneonta had two set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but Cortland fought them off with kills by Moran and Moore. Cortland won the set after two more kills by Moore.

Cortland appeared to be in control of the second set at 23-12 and 24-19, but Oneonta clawed back and eventually pulled to within 24-23 after a block by Moulder and Fowler. Cortland won the set on a Konzen kill.

In the third set, Cortland led 23-22 and was two points away from winning the match. A service error tied the set at 23, and Oneonta then had set points at 24-23 and 25-24 thwarted by an attack error and a Konzen kill. Oneonta finally claimed the set on a Culeton kill and a Cortland misplay.

Cortland opened strong in the fourth set with an 11-6 lead, and the Red Dragons led 21-16 before Oneonta rallied. The teams were tied at 23-23 after a Moulder kill, and Cortland erased four ensuing Oneonta set points before two attack errors gave Oneonta a 29-27 win and sent the teams to a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, Cortland trailed only once at 1-0 before scoring three straight points, including a Moran kill and Amelio ace. Cortland led 8-5 at the changeover and increased the margin to 10-5 on a Konzen kill and an Oneonta attack error. Oneonta got two points back and trailed 10-7, but Cortland scored the next two, one on an Anderson kill, to go up 12-7.

The teams traded the next four points, with a service error by Oneonta putting Cortland ahead 14-9. Oneonta fought off two match points on a Cortland service error and a Moulder kill, but a kill by Moran gave Cortland the 15-11 win and the victory.
