CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each finished first at the season-opening Cortland Pumpkin Relays at Holsten Pool.
Cortland's women finished with 305 points, followed by New Paltz with 261. Marywood (230), Roberts Wesleyan (176) and Wells (60) rounded out the field. For the men, Cortland recorded a score of 327 points and New Paltz was runner-up with 255. Marywood placed third with 146, Wells fourth with 49 and Roberts Wesleyan fifth with 40.
Cortland hosted a season-opening relay meet for the second straight year. The event featured an unorthodox format with many relays that are normally not held, including a number of three-swimmer events.
Eleven Red Dragon women swam on at least one winning relay, with four Cortland swimmers -
Becca Kanoza (Syracuse/West Genesee),
Marissa Kordal (Eden),
Kelly Davey (Plattsburgh) and
Heidi Simpfenderfer (Poughkeepsie/Roy C. Ketcham) - on three different winning units.
Kanoza,
Alana Szewczyk (South Wales/Holland), Kordal and Davey won the 400-yard medley relay (4:14.30) and
Lily Miller (Buffalo/Starpoint), Davey,
Kailyn Anselment (Moreau/Glens Falls) and Simpfenderfer won the 650-yard (50/100/200/300) relay (6:43.44).
Szewczyk,
Emma Gulbin (Wall Township, NJ/Wall) and
Vanessa Vegder (Dansville) teamed to win the 3x100-yard breaststroke relay (3:41.38).
Erica Koumas (East Meadow),
Julia Torell (Camillus/CBA) and Kordal won the 3x100-yard butterfly relay (3:08.20), while Kordal, Simpfenderfer and Kanoza captured the 3x100-yard individual medley relay (3:21.92). Kanoza, Miller, Simpfenderfer and Davey earned a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.77).
Cortland's men won all eight races.
Nick Galeto (West Islip) swam on five of those winning relays,
Bailey Eigbrett (Avon) was part of four winning teams, and
Dylan Cornelia (Deer Park),
Eric Kohlhoff (West Islip) and
Tim Rokos (Duanesburg) each contributed to three winning entries.
Galeto, Cornelia,
Billy Donlevy (Bayside/Holy Cross) and Eigbrett won the 400-yard medley relay (3:46.01) and Kohlhoff, Eigbrett,
Jason Boyko (Poughkeepsie/Our Lady of Lourdes) and
Hunter Bernhardt (Groton) won the 650-yard (50/100/200/300) relay (6:05.24).
Thomas Ryan (Long Beach), Rokos and Galeto took top honors in the 3x100-yard backstroke relay (2:52.98).
Alex Fisher (Smithtown/Hauppauge),
Noah Farmer (New Hartford) and Cornelia won the 3x100-yard breaststroke relay (3:14.22) and Donlevy, Boyko and
Adam Kirchgessner (West Irondequoit) posted the best time in the 3x100-yard butterfly relay (2:50.84).
Rokos, Fisher and Galeto won the 3x100-yard individual medley relay (2:55.71). Rokos and Galeto were also part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.78), and Galeto, Cornelia, Eigbrett and Kohlhoff closed the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.33).
In women's diving, Cortland took first place on both boards as three divers each contributed two dives to the scores.
Taylor Williams (Middletown/Minisink Valley),
Morgan Boone (Rome/Notre Dame) and
Paige Miller (Waverly) combined for scores of 221.20 points on the 1-meter board and 219.75 points on the 3-meter board (the official results mistakenly show Williams as the lone Cortland women's diver). In men's diving,
Patrick Conway (Wantagh/Kellenberg Memorial) finished first in both events with six-dive scores of 213.80 points on the 1-meter board and 202.40 points on the 3-meter board.
Cortland will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. when it hosts Ithaca for men's and women's dual meets.
