CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) broke a 1-1 second-half tie with a pair of goals as the Cortland field hockey team defeated St. Lawrence, 3-1, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 12-5 with the victory. The Saints dropped to 5-10.
Sophomore
Valerie Brillaud (Nesconset/Smithtown East) added a goal for Cortland, while seniors
Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and
Dani Barto (Nichols/Tioga Central) each collected an assist. Senior goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made five saves.
Freshman Maggie Green (Dover, MA/Dover-Sherborn) scored St. Lawrence's goal with senior Lucy Stillman (Fairfax, VT/Rice Memorial) assisting. Sophomore goalie Sydney Giacin (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day) turned aside 13 shots. Seniors Melissa Grosshans (Barker) and Lindsey Houseman (Holderness, NH) each recorded a defensive save.
Brillaud gave Cortland the lead 6:34 before the half when she deflected a hard pass deep in the box off a hard pass from Gibaldi. The Saints wasted little time in the second half tying the score. Stillman sent a pass into the right side of the circle where Green one-timed a low shot inside the right post just 2:27 into the half.
Welsh connected for the game-winner at 55:47 with a long blast off a pass from Barto on a penalty corner. Welsh then tallied an insurance goal with 4:58 remaining in regulation off a similar play, ripping a high shot from straight on that deflected off Giacin and inside the right post for the 3-1 final.
