ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Cortland women's volleyball team lost two matches Friday at the New York State Regional Challenge, hosted by RIT, falling 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 to Montclair State of New Jersey and 25-19, 25-22, 25-17 to the University of Rochester.
Cortland (11-19) will not be competing at Day 2 of the tournament, but instead will close its season with two matches Saturday at Houghton College. The Red Dragons will play the host Highlanders at noon and Geneva College (Pa.) at 2 p.m.
Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) led Cortland versus Montclair State with eight kills. She added five digs and finished with a .273 attack percentage.
Nicole Van Pelt (Montgomery/Valley Central) had seven kills, three blocks and a .278 attack percentage, and
Camryn Anderson (Bronx/Cardinal Spellman) finished with seven kills and a team-high four blocks.
Kiersten Cote (East Rockaway/Kellenberg Memorial) recorded a team-high 10 digs and
Emilee Chiavetta (Angola/Immaculata Academy) had six digs.
Malley Bowen (Owego/Tioga Central) and
Gabby Amelio (Pine Bush) finished with 10 and nine assists, respectively.
Carly Waterman led Montclair State (17-7) with 11 kills. Natalia Majkut had eight kills and Ashley Griffith distributed 32 assists.
Cortland was within 20-17 in the first set before Montclair scored three straight points and led by at least four from that mark. The second set was also tight with the Red Hawks holding on to only a 21-19 lead before tallying the final four points. The decisive stretch for Montclair in the third set was a 5-0 run that turned a 12-8 lead into a 17-8 advantage.
Van Pelt put down a team-best seven kills and Anderson and Moore totaled six kills each in the loss to Rochester. Amelio ended with 20 assists, three aces and eight digs and Cote led the Red Dragons with 10 digs.
Rochester (21-9) was paced by Clara Martinez's 11 kills with only one error in 16 attempts for a .625 attack percentage. Allie DeRubertis and Alara Kocak had eight kills each and Beth Ghyzel finished with 34 assists.
In the first set Rochester was clinging to a 17-15 lead before scoring four points, two from Kocak on a kill and an ace. Cortland led 19-18 in the second set after an Amelio kill, but a kill by Kocak and three straight Ghyzel aces put the Yellowjackets up 22-19. Cortland was down 24-22 after an Amelio ace, but Rochester won the set on a block by Tamera Shaw and Kate Korslund. Rochester claimed the third set behind a 7-0 run that extended a 17-14 lead to 24-14. Cortland fought off three match points on kills by Moore, Amelio and
Taylor Konzen (Bohemia/Connetquot), but Kocak's kill ended the set and the match.
