NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Jackie Kanapes scored the tiebreaking goal with 19:58 remaining to give top-seeded New Paltz a 2-1 win over third-seeded Cortland in the SUNYAC Field Hockey Tournament championship game.
Cortland (13-6) took a 1-0 lead just 3:24 into the contest when
Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) knocked in a rebound for her team-high 21st goal of the season. New Paltz (12-7) tied the game in the 20th minute on an unassisted tally by Kaitlyn Gunter.
The Hawks took the lead on a deflection by Kanapes off a ball passed into the middle by Gunter. Cortland pressured a number of times for the tying goal but New Paltz goalie Ryan Dowling made four of her seven saves over the final 16 minutes, including two stops with less than four minutes remaining.
Cortland goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made nine saves, six in the second half. New Paltz finished with a 17-13 advantage in shots and 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Dowling was named the tournament MVP, with Gunter, Maggie Cottrell and Jessica Ascencao also representing New Paltz on the all-tournament team. Gibaldi, Reinoehl and
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) made the all-tournament team for Cortland, along with Geneseo's Julia Kim and Jordan Penkitis and Oneonta's Danell Jones and Allyson Wells.
